I've spent a long time thinking about it, and I've decided I can't carry on with this blog. It was always difficult given that I occasionally spend longish periods of time away from Manchester, and my job is leaving me with very little free time. Taking photos is in danger of becoming a chore rather than a hobby, which I never want it to be.

If I see anything particularly photogenic, I may post occasionally. But this is no longer a daily photo blog.

This photo is a night version of one of the very first photos on Manchester Daily Photo.

An unusual row of shops in Levenshulme. 'manunitedtravel' didn't seem to have anything to do with Manchester United, as far as I could tell, but a famous name sells. I'll be back in Levenshulme in a few days time with something quite interesting.

Postbox

This postbox sits just underneath the bridge in Corporation Street (see link below). When a bomb exploded next to it in 1996, it was the only thing left standing in the street. The plaque on it reads:

This postbox remained standing almost undamaged on June 15th 1996 when this area was devastated by a bomb. The box was removed during the rebuilding of the city centre and was returned to its original site on November 22nd 1999

Signs of Change

This sign is round the corner from Prestwich tram station. It's obviously been there for some time because of all the dirt and grime on it, but the telltale white sticker blanks out the British Rail logo from the time when the station was served by trains between Victoria and Bury.

Lowry Centre

Built in 1999 to house LS Lowry's paintings and two theatres, the Lowry is a fairly huge building which is difficult to photograph well. The design was inspired by a ship, due to the area's nautical history.

It's often very quiet around here, especially at the weekend (when this photo was taken). It's slightly strange to see a body of water this big but completely still. The occasional swan glides past though, seemingly unperturbed.

As well as the old industrial buildings which have been converted and modernised, this area is seeing a lot of new development. These curved blocks will be very popular with workers at the BBC's new media:city development, which is being built just behind the left tower.

Salford Quays - Grain Wharf

This building used to be a warehouse - the two bits that jut forwards to the quayside housed the grain lifts. It's now an office development. All of the buildings around here are becoming much more commercially attractive due to the impending arrival of the BBC - of which more tomorrow.

Salford Quays - bridge

The area around Salford Quays is full of walkways, towpaths and bridges criss-crossing the various bodies of water. This bridge used to cross the Manchester Ship Canal; it was floated along the canal and into the quays to stand here, leaving the Trafford Road swing bridge to do its job.

Victoria Mural

Not a Victorian mural, but one at Victoria station. There's no indication of whose work it is, but I'm guessing it was commissioned by Metrolink as it's adjacent to one of their platforms. It depicts the city rather well - starting on the right with Central and the Town Hall in the south, going through to the Northern Quarter's old warehouse buildings and the Co-operative Group offices (of which more in a couple of weeks). Then there's the Metrolink trams linking through the whole thing.

I tried to take a photo without that lamp-post in the way, but it proved impossible.

Around the back of Manchester Cathedral (which we've seen before - look back through the links for views from different sides), there is a series of blue plaques commemorating various people who've been important to the religious history of Manchester.

This quirky stall caught my eye as I passed - I've walked past it so many times and never noticed that it was in a tram (or at least mocked up to look like one). The staff are very friendly, and even put their hats on for the photo!

Stop the War

A couple of days late, due to my losing my camera cable and having to use others from my photo bank - there was a Stop the War march through Manchester city centre this Saturday. It went up Oxford Road, through St Peter's Square and past Central (where the Labour party conference is being held). There were police officers everywhere (a solitary one is in evidence here) but it all went smoothly and there was no trouble.

It's only a little street - just wide enough for one vehicle - but it's a busy shortcut from the financial hub and central areas up to the north of the city. It crosses the busiest pedestrian flow on Market Street at this end, so the traffic lights usually stay green for pedestrians longer than they do for road traffic.

A friend of mine commented that the map of the city centre "looks like a cosmic donkey". I wrote it off as drivel at first, but the more I look at it the more I see what he meant... the Northern Quarter is the ears, Castlefield the nose, the Oxford Road corridor the neck, and the Mancunian Way forms the bridle. It's cosmic because the blue sign represents outer space, apparently. Can you see it?

Mystery

This one's a bit of a mystery. It's next door to the Savoy (see yesterday's photo) and behind a lot of imposing fencework and undergrowth. It's a substation of some sort, if the fading signs on the brickwork are to be believed, but I'm intrigued by the crest at the top of the building. The wording on it says CONCILIO ET LABORE, but I can't work out whose crest it is, or what the letters underneath it mean. Any ideas?

Spot the odd one out! This 'tree' is at the end of a row of real trees. There's no sign or plaque on it, as there usually is on art installations - it's just there, as if it's entirely congruous.

Slightly further along from the Vimto sculpture is this piece of rope. Yes, it's actual rope, and a lot of it - the whole thing is taller than me, anyway. I'm told that, a year or two ago, it was found one morning in the student village three miles away. It's been bolted down ever since.

It's a little-known fact that Vimto was invented in Manchester, on the site of what is now the University of Manchester's North Campus. This monument, carved in wood, marks the spot. You can see a slightly more colourful shot of it here.

Let's have a look at a couple of Manchester's pubs. Formerly the Grosvenor Picture Palace (you can still see the lettering above the door), this pub was originally called the Footage and Firkin, but the 'Firkin' seems to have been dropped.

The Aquatic Centre, built for the Commonwealth Games, is now Manchester's main swimming centre. I've always liked the building - I know I post a lot of photos of buildings, but there's something about the shape of this one that appeals to me.

This church puzzles me somewhat. A sign outside advertises the Catholic Chaplaincy to the University of Manchester, but the church's website doesn't say anything of the sort; meanwhile, the Chaplaincy's website says that they're elsewhere.

The Central Manchester Hospitals share a site - Manchester Royal Infirmary (the main hospital), the Royal Eye Hospital (eyes) and St Mary's Hospital (for women and children). It can be quite complicated to get around; there are lots of signposts like this and even a corridor 'network' with junctions and suchlike!

Barton Arcade - Deansgate side

Here's the other entrance to Barton Arcade, the shopping arcade we saw yesterday. Even here, on a major thoroughfare and shopping street, it's quite nondescript. If I had a better camera you'd be able to make out the vertical words 'BARTON ARCADE' on the rectangular sign over the gates.

Barton Arcade is a gorgeous little shopping arcade tucked away next to St Ann's Square. It's an eclectic mix of jewellers, boutiques and such. From this side, you wouldn't know it was there unless you were looking for it.

There's a network of free buses around the city centre, some of which runs on roads closed to other traffic. Unfortunately the bollards tend to fail on a semi-regular basis, resulting in this sort of sight and heavy delays to the buses while they find their way round to other gates. (It causes other problems too - while I was taking this photo, a convoy of police vehicles was flying around the surrounding streets, trying to find a way through to where they needed to be.)

The Crescent

The Crescent pub (named after the road on which it stands) is well known for its unique atmosphere, range of drinks and real ale, and coal fire. It's even said that Karl Marx used to drink here. Despite its rather run-down exterior, inside it's one of the area's most lively pubs.

The big screen shows news, features and special programmes from BBC Manchester. It was originally put up for the Commonwealth Games a few years ago, and has been used for various events since. Here, it's shouting out the evening news.

Water pours forth from these 'taps' along a little channel full of stepping stones - you can only see a little bit of it here. Every now and then, someone puts washing-up liquid in it, which is quite a sight.

Primark is one of the biggest shops in Manchester. It seems to grow and grow as time goes on - it's absorbed the shops around it (and even beneath it) and keeps growing. It covers almost an entire side of this block, and has faces on two other sides round the corner as well.
